The Hoste Arms Manor was originally the manor house of Burnham Westgate, built in 1550. The first records of it being an inn and hotel were recorded in 1651 when customs officers were known to have stayed. It was owned by the Pitt family and became known as the Pitt Arms, a well-known coaching Inn, being the first stop from Wells on the way to London. Admiral Lord Nelson was known to have visited the Pitt Arms every Saturday to receive his dispatches during his period of unemployment from 1788 to 1793.
The Pitt Arms served many roles over the years. It once housed the livestock auction market and later the assizes, where the famous Burnham housewife murderers had their preliminary trials before being sentenced to death at Norwich prison. It was even a brothel in the late Victorian period.
In 1811 the Pitt Arms changed its name to The Hoste Arms. Captain Sir William Hoste was Nelson’s protege and flew the flags after winning the battle of Lissa, hence remembering Nelson who had been killed six years previously. The Hoste family were huge land owners in the area who had recently purchased Sandringham. The Hoste Arms fell under brewery ownership in the 1860s and suffered 130 years of decline.
The Hoste Arms was privately acquired in December 1989 and was rapidly transformed from a pub with no bedrooms and a small dining room for thirty five people, into a thirty-six bedroom hotel with a top class restaurant serving 150 meals a night. It grew from 2000 with the acquisition and conversion of Vine House, the development of the original Railway Hosue, the railway carriage and building of three luxury self-catering Holiday Cottages. The Hoste Beauty Spa was launched in March 2011, and has already gained a reputation as one of East Anglia’s leading spa destinations.
The ownership of The Hoste Group transferred to Brendan and Bee Hopkins in April 2012. Brendan and Bee first stayed in the hotel twenty years ago. Under their ownership, The Hoste in 2013 is developing a stylish new garden room with a new reception area, increasing the bedrooms to 62 and extending the Spa.The kitchen often now serves up to 500 meals a day.
