Burnham in the Fifties

Posted on by victoria

The series of black and white photographs in the Garden Room corridor, are, courtesy of The Saltwater Gallery, and by the celebrated Burnham Market photographer and pharmacist Gilbert White.

These are taken from an incredible, previously unseen, local archive from the 1940’s, ‘50’s and ‘60’s. Gilbert White was born on 1st December 1908 and moved to Burnham Market when he was a few months old. He was educated in the village and at King Edward V11 Grammar School, King’s Lynn.

In 1953 he took over from his father to run White’s Pharmacy in Burnham Market until his retirement in 1975. As a professional photographer Gilbert was much in demand for weddings and many of his images of the Burnhams were made into postcards, some of which are displayed here.

The images signify the start of the collection of a photographic archive of Burnham Market and the surrounding area. Please tell us if you visit the Hoste and recognise anyone in these photographs. We would love to start putting names to faces.
